Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in City of Launceston in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (6,358 people or 19.6%)
  • Retail Trade (3,495 people or 10.8%)
  • Education and Training (3,063 people or 9.4%)

In combination, these three industries employed 12,916 people in total or 39.8% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional TAS employed 16.0% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.8% in Retail Trade; and 8.5% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the City of Launceston and Regional TAS were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (19.6% compared to 16.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (3.1% compared to 8.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in mining (0.5% compared to 1.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (6.4% compared to 7.5%)

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in the City of Launceston were for those employed in:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+390 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+332 persons)
