Dominant groups

Analysis of the non-English speaking population in the City of Knox in 2011 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a similar proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a similar proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 14.8% of the non-English speaking population was aged between 0 and 14, and 13.4% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 15.1% and 13.7% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The major differences between the age groups of the non-English speaking population in the City of Knox and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of people aged 50 to 54 (8.4% compared to 6.1%)
  • A larger percentage of people aged 45 to 49 (8.8% compared to 7.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of people aged 25 to 29 (6.2% compared to 9.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of people aged 20 to 24 (5.6% compared to 8.3%)

Emerging groups

From 2006 to 2011, City of Knox's non-English speaking population increased by 5,582 people (21.5%). This represents an average annual population change of 3.97% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the age groups of the non-English speaking population in this area between 2006 and 2011 were in the age groups:

  • 30 to 34 (+690 persons)
  • 60 to 64 (+602 persons)
  • 25 to 29 (+514 persons)
  • 50 to 54 (+491 persons)
