This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in The Escarpment in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Education and Training (1,175 people or 12.5%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,140 people or 12.1%)
  • Construction (880 people or 9.4%)

In combination, these three industries employed 3,195 people in total or 34.0% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Western Australia employed 8.8% in Education and Training; 13.6% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 8.8% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of The Escarpment and Western Australia were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in education and training (12.5% compared to 8.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (12.1% compared to 13.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (5.2% compared to 6.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (0.9% compared to 2.3%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in The Escarpment increased by 685 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in The Escarpment were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+229 persons)
  • Mining (+228 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+95 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+74 persons)
