A high level of unemployment or low participation rate (the percentage of the population in the labour force) can indicate a community of recent migrants with difficulties adjusting to economic life in Australia, and in some cases with a reliance on government benefits.
Differences in employment status for the local overseas-born populations may be related to the age and length of time that population has been in Australia, and the reason for migration (eg. some people migrate specifically for employment, so unemployment would be expected to be low in this case).

The size of the Inner West Council's labour force born in China in 2021 was 2,894 people, of which 768 were employed part-time and 1,533 were full time workers.
Analysis of the employment status of the population born in China (as a percentage of the labour force) in the Inner West Council in 2021 compared to Greater Sydney shows that there was a lower proportion in employment, and a higher proportion unemployed. Overall, 91.6% of the labour force born in China was employed and 5.3% unemployed, compared with 92.8% and 4.1% respectively for Greater Sydney.
The labour force participation rate refers to the proportion of the population over 15 years of age that was employed or actively looking for work.
Analysis of the labour force participation rate of the population born in China in the Inner West Council in 2021 shows that there was a similar proportion in the labour force (53.9%) compared with Greater Sydney (54.1%).
