Newport West is bounded by Blackshaws Road in the north, the railway line in the east and south, and Blenheim Road, a line that traverses around the western boundary of Bayside Secondary College, Blenheim Road, Mason Street and a line that runs north-south to the west of Charlotte Street in the west.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1880s, spurred by the establishment of the Newport railway workshops. Expansion continued during the early 1900s and the immediate post-war years. The population was relatively stable between 1991 and 2006, and then increased between 2006 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium density housing.
Newport West is an established predominantly residential area.
Major features of the area include Newport Lakes Park, Loft Reserve, Hoffman Reserve, Jack Madigan Reserve, Bryan Martyn Oval and several schools.
This area includes the north-western part of the suburb of Newport. This area does not include the Newport Rail workshops, which are located in the Williamstown North area.
