The three largest ancestries in the Gunnedah Shire in 2011 were Australian, English and Irish.

Ancestry defines the cultural association and ethnic background of an individual going back three generations. Ancestry is a good measure of the total size of cultural groups in the Gunnedah Shire regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the ancestry responses of the population in Gunnedah Shire in 2011 shows that the top five ancestries nominated were:

  • Australian (5,834 people or 48.3%)
  • English (4,762 people or 39.4%)
  • Irish (1,361 people or 11.3%)
  • Scottish (1,195 people or 9.9%)
  • German (506 people or 4.2%)

In combination these five ancestries account for 13,658 responses in total, or 113.02% of all responses.

The major differences between the ancestries of the population in the Gunnedah Shire and Regional NSW were:
