Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s. Limited growth took place until the late 1800s, when the possibility of the Main Northern railway running along the plateau led to increased land sales. The establishment of Gosford Farm Home for Boys at Mount Penang in 1912 was the first major development in the immediate area. In the post WW1 era Woy Woy Road construction, and the completion to Gosford of the Pacific Highway, greatly enhanced transportation for residents. Significant development occurred in the post-war years, with improved highway connections making the area attractive to car commuters. In the 1980s Kariong experienced rapid growth as a Landcom residential development area. Rapid growth continued during the early 1990s, with growth slowing considerably during the late 1990s. The population was relatively stable between 2001 and 2006 when few new dwellings were constructed, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2011 as dwelling stock increased again.
