About the profile areas

The 2015 Estimated Resident Population for Broken Bay is 6,051, with a population density of 1.37 persons per hectare.

Location and boundaries

Broken Bay includes two separate areas. The small eastern section is bounded by the locality of Kariong in the north, the locality of Koolewong in the east, the Woy Woy Inlet, the locality of Woy Woy and Woy Woy Road in the south, and the locality of Kariong and Woy Woy Road in the west. The largest section is bounded by Brisbane Water, the suburbs of Empire Bay, Bensville and McMasters Beach in the north, the Tasman Sea in the east, Broken Bay in the south, and the localities of Little Wobby, Woy Woy, Umina Beach, Ettalong Beach, Booker Bay and Blackwall in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1839 when the first land grants were made. Limited growth took place until the late 1800s. Growth continued in the early 1900s, aided by subdivision. The most significant development occurred during the post-war years, particularly from the 1970s. The population increased slightly during the 1990s, was relatively stable between 2001 and 2006, and then declined slightly between 2006 and 2011, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
