Analysis of the service age groups of Cairns (R) in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) and a lower proportion of people in the older age groups (60+ years).
Overall, 23.0% of the population was aged between 0 and 17, and 21.5% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 21.7% and 23.0% respectively for Australia.
The major differences between the age structure of Cairns (R) and Australia were:
- A larger percentage of 'Older workers & pre-retirees' (13.6% compared to 12.4%)
- A larger percentage of 'Secondary schoolers' (8.3% compared to 7.2%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Seniors' (8.8% compared to 10.0%)
- A smaller percentage of 'Young workforce' (13.2% compared to 14.3%)
