Settlement history
European settlement dates from the 1820s, being one of the earliest areas of Perth to be settled. Land was used mainly for farming, market gardening, brickmaking and boat building. Growth took place during the 1890s and early 1900s, aided by gold discoveries and the construction of the railway line. Residential expansion continued during the 1920s, accompanied by industrial growth. Significant development occurred during the post-war years, largely from immigration and public housing construction. The population was relatively stable between 1991 and 2006 at about 13,000 people, and then increased slightly to over 14,000 people in 2011.
