Wagaman and Wanguri are named after Aboriginal tribes.

Settlement history

Development of the area was primarily during the 1970s, with much of the area built before Cyclone Tracy struck in 1974. The population declined slightly during the 1990s, and then was relatively stable between 2001 and 2011.
