Nightcliff is bounded by the Beagle Gulf in the north, Nightcliff Road in the east, Progress Drive, Dick Ward Drive and the suburb of Coconut Drive in the south and the Timor Sea foreshore in the west.

Name origin

Nightcliff is named after an area called ‘Night Cliff' marked on the original plan of Port Darwin in 1869.

Settlement history

Development of the area was primarily during the 1950s. The population fluctuated slightly during the 1990s, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2011 as new dwellings were added to the area.

Nightcliff is an established residential area.

Major features of the area include Nightcliff Oval, Nightcliff Swimming Pool, Nightcliff Foreshore, Nightcliff Beach, Nightcliff Jetty, Nightcliff Sporting Complex, Bill Bell Park, Nightcliff Community Centre and one school.
