Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Western Sydney (LGA) in 2021 compared to Liverpool City shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 48.3% of the population used English only, and 45.7% used a non-English language, compared with 39.5% and 53.8% respectively for Liverpool City.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Western Sydney (LGA) was Arabic, with 7.1% of the population, or 185,377 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Western Sydney (LGA) and Liverpool City in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (3.9% compared to 1.4%)
  • A smaller percentage using Arabic at home (7.1% compared to 13.1%)
  • A smaller percentage using Serbian at home (0.5% compared to 2.3%)
  • A smaller percentage using Vietnamese at home (3.7% compared to 5.3%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 186,539 or 18.6%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 82,219 or 7.0%.
