Occupation of employment

There were more male technicians and trades workers in Canberra Region in 2021 than any other occupation.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Canberra Region in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Technicians and Trades Workers (17,234 males or 23.7%)
  • Managers (13,853 males or 19.0%)
  • Professionals (10,221 males or 14.0%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 41,308 males in total or 56.8% of the employed male resident population.

In comparison, Wagga Wagga City employed 24.6% in Technicians and Trades Workers; 14.8% in Managers; and 15.4% in Professionals.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Canberra Region and Wagga Wagga City were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed as Managers (19.0% compared to 14.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (6.8% compared to 9.2%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Sales Workers (5.8% compared to 7.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed as Professionals (14.0% compared to 15.4%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Canberra Region increased by 8,380 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of male residents between 2016 and 2021 in Canberra Region were for those employed as:

  • Technicians and Trades Workers (+2,204 males)
  • Professionals (+1,886 males)
  • Managers (+1,711 males)
  • Labourers (+756 males)
