More Canberra Region male residents worked in construction than any other industry in 2021.

Canberra Region's industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Canberra Region in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Construction (13,214 males or 18.2%)
  • Public Administration and Safety (8,816 males or 12.1%)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (5,874 males or 8.1%)

In combination, these three industries employed 27,904 males in total or 38.3% of the total employed male resident population.

In comparison, Wagga Wagga City employed 14.6% in Construction; 12.2% in Public Administration and Safety; and 5.9% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.

The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Canberra Region and Wagga Wagga City were:

  • A larger percentage of males employed in construction (18.2% compared to 14.6%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (8.1% compared to 5.9%)
  • A larger percentage of males employed in professional, scientific and technical services (5.6% compared to 3.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of males employed in health care and social assistance (4.6% compared to 7.5%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed males in Canberra Region increased by 8,420 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the male resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Canberra Region were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+2,928 males)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+1,114 males)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+930 males)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+664 males)
