West Lakes - West Lakes Shore - Tennyson is bounded by Mirani Court, Military Road, Edwin Street, Dunstone Road, Sansom Road, Recreation Parade, a line running continuous of Recreation Parade, Boating Lake and Bower Road in the north, Old Port Road and Frederick Road in the east, West Lakes Boulevard, the suburb of Seaton, Brebner Drive, The Grange Golf Club, Trimmer Parade, Military Road and Fort Street in the south, and Gulf St Vincent in the west.

Name origin

Tennyson is named after Baron Tennyson, former Governor of South Australia and Governor-General of Australia.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1830s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1970s. The suburbs of West Lakes and West Lakes Shore were constructed in the 1970s on reclaimed swampland in the upper reaches of the Port River. Rapid residential development took place from the early 1970s into the late 1980s. The population declined slightly between 1991 and 2006 as few new dwellings were added to the area and the average number of persons living in each dwelling declined. The population was relatively stable between 2006 and 2011, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
