The Cessnock Planning District is a long area that stretches from the north to the south sandwiches between the Rural West Planning district and the Kurri Kurri planning district. On the northern boundary lies the Shire of Singleton, Branxton Planning District and a sliver of Maitland. The eastern boundary lies against the localities of Keinbah, Sawyers Gully, Abermain, Neath, Richmond Vale, Mulbring and Mount Vincent. Baker Road and Watagan Forest Road complete the easter boundary. The southern boundary tracks the Watagan Forest Road. The western boundary tracks up through the Watagans National Park, touching on the localities of Congewai, Ellalong and Pelton. The boundary runs through the locality of Mount View before running along Cedar Creek.
