The ability of the population to access services and employment is strongly influenced by access to transport. The number of motor vehicles per household in Central Coast NSW quantifies access to private transport for those speaking a language other than English at home.

The number of motor vehicles among the non-English speaking population may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as the Age Structure of that population, ability to drive and availability of other transport options (eg. public transport) in the area of residence.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the car ownership of non-English speakers in Central Coast NSW in 2021 compared to the total population in Central Coast NSW shows that 94.9% were in households that owned at least one car, while 3.9% did not, compared with 92.1% and 3.4% respectively in the total population in Central Coast NSW.

Of those that owned at least one vehicle, there was a larger proportion owned just one car; a larger proportion owned two cars; and a smaller proportion that owned three cars or more.

Overall, 34.2% of non-English speakers were in households that owned one car; 41.3% owned two cars; and 19.4% owned three cars or more, compared with 26.0%, 39.5% and 26.5% respectively for the total population in Central Coast NSW.

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the household car ownership for non-English speakers in Central Coast NSW between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • 2 motor vehicles (+2,516 persons)
  • 1 motor vehicle (+1,923 persons)
  • 3 or more motor vehicles (+1,465 persons)
  • No motor vehicles (+61 persons)
