Low income households - Internet connection

In 2011, 40.9% of people in low income households in the Central Coast Council area had access to a broadband internet connection.

A fast Internet Connection is increasingly required for accessing essential information and undertaking domestic and non-domestic business. Households with dial-up or no internet service are being left behind in the digital divide as both government and the private sector are increasingly conducting their business, or aspects of it, on-line.

Typically across Australia, internet access is correlated with both age and incomes. Low income households are less likely to have internet access than high income households in general, but this may vary depending on the role and function of each area in housing those on low incomes. For instance areas where the main low income households are student populations may have quite high levels of internet access.

Internet connectivity in the Central Coast Council area can be affected by availability of connection, Education Attending and Age Structure, as well as incomes.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the type of internet connection for low income households in the Central Coast Council area compared to New South Wales shows that there was a similar proportion of low income households with no access to an internet connection, and a lower proportion of households with broadband connectivity.

Overall 47.7% of low income households had no access to an internet connection and 40.9% had broadband connectivity, compared with 47.2% and 41.4% respectively for New South Wales.

Between 2006 and 2011, access to an internet connection for low income households increased by 7,588.
