In 2021, there were more recent overseas arrivals living in Central Coast NSW who worked as professionals than any other occupation.

Central Coast NSW's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which recent arrivals (who are residents) work. The work destination may be in the local area or elsewhere.

The type of work done by recent arrivals is influenced by their age structure, qualifications and migration stream. Many of Australia's recent migrants are skilled arrivals who fill identified skill gaps in particular occupation groups.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by recent overseas arrivals in Central Coast Council area in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Professionals (802 persons or 30.5%)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (434 persons or 16.5%)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (324 persons or 12.3%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 1,560 people in total or 59.3% of the employed recent overseas arrivals.

In comparison, Greater Sydney employed 30.5% in Professionals; 12.6% in Community and Personal Service Workers; and 9.8% in Technicians and Trades Workers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the recent overseas arriving population of Central Coast Council area and Greater Sydney were:

  • A larger percentage of people employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (16.5% compared to 12.6%)
  • A larger percentage of people employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (12.3% compared to 9.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Sales Workers (5.6% compared to 7.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (5.2% compared to 7.0%)
