There were more professionals in Canberra Region in 2021 than any other occupation.

Canberra Region's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Canberra Region's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Canberra Region in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Professionals (26,063 people or 18.4%)
  • Managers (23,383 people or 16.5%)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (20,648 people or 14.6%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 70,094 people in total or 49.4% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Regional NSW employed 19.2% in Professionals; 13.4% in Managers; and 14.5% in Technicians and Trades Workers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Canberra Region and Regional NSW were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed as Managers (16.5% compared to 13.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed as Community and Personal Service Workers (11.9% compared to 13.2%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Canberra Region increased by 17,914 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2016 and 2021 in Canberra Region were for those employed as:

  • Professionals (+4,877 persons)
  • Managers (+3,803 persons)
  • Community and Personal Service Workers (+2,680 persons)
  • Technicians and Trades Workers (+2,663 persons)
