Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types in Canberra Region in 2021 compared to Regional NSW shows that there was a similar proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 24.9% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 9.1% were one-parent families, compared with 24.8% and 10.9% respectively for Regional NSW.
There were a similar proportion of lone person households and a higher proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 26.0% compared to 26.1% in Regional NSW while the proportion of couples without children was 29.7% compared to 27.7% in Regional NSW.
Emerging groups
The number of households in Canberra Region increased by 11,654 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types in Canberra Region between 2016 and 2021 were:
- Couples without children (+4,194 households)
- Lone person (+3,208 households)
- Couples with children (+2,815 households)
- One parent families (+917 households)
