Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Canning in 2021 compared to Greater Perth shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 52.9% of the population used English only, and 42.8% used a non-English language, compared with 74.0% and 20.9% respectively for Greater Perth.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Canning was Mandarin, with 9.8% of the population, or 9,393 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of the City of Canning and Greater Perth in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (9.8% compared to 2.3%)
  • A larger percentage using Cantonese at home (3.3% compared to 0.9%)
  • A larger percentage using Punjabi at home (3.0% compared to 0.9%)
  • A larger percentage using Malayalam at home (1.8% compared to 0.4%)

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 5,234 or 14.6%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 660 or 1.3%.

The largest changes in the languages used by the population in the City of Canning between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:

  • Punjabi (+1,270 persons)
  • Mandarin (+805 persons)
  • Urdu (+536 persons)
  • Nepali (+448 persons)
