More City of Canning residents worked in health care and social assistance than any other industry in 2016.

The City of Canning’s industry statistics identify the industry sectors in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Derived from the two Census questions:

'What best describes the business of your employer?' and 'What are the main goods produced or main services provided by your employers business?'

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in City of Canning in 2016 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (5,375 people or 12.8%)
  • Retail Trade (4,270 people or 10.1%)
  • Education and Training (4,015 people or 9.5%)

In combination, these three industries employed 13,660 people in total or 32.4% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Greater Perth employed 12.3% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.8% in Retail Trade; and 8.8% in Education and Training.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the City of Canning and Greater Perth were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (8.6% compared to 6.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (7.4% compared to 9.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in mining (3.5% compared to 5.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in City of Canning decreased by 895 between 2011 and 2016.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2011 and 2016 in the City of Canning were for those employed in:

  • Manufacturing (-1,374 persons)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+804 persons)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (-678 persons)
  • Wholesale trade (-655 persons)
