Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for pastoral purposes. Growth took place during the 1870s and 1880s, as land was subdivided, the railway lines were constructed, townships were established and grain growing became the primary industry. The population declined gradually from the early 1990s, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Urban Buloke includes urban/township areas, with some surrounding rural areas. The main industry is agriculture, particularly grain growing and sheep and cattle farming.

Major features of the area include Donald Racecourse, Charlton Harness Racing Club, Wycheproof Racecourse, Birchip Golf Club, Charlton Golf Club, Donald Golf Club, Sea Lake Golf Club, Charlton Showground, Donald Showground, East Wimmera Health Services (Birchip, Charlton, Donald and Wycheproof Campuses), Charlton Golden Grains Museum, Donald Agricultural Museum, Shire offices, Centenary Park, Bullocks Head Lookout, Mount Wycheproof, Lake Buloke, various swimming pools, the Avoca River and a number of schools.
