Dominant groups

Analysis of the housing tenure of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Broken Hill City in 2011 compared to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in New South Wales - ATSI shows that there was a larger proportion of households who owned their dwelling; a larger proportion purchasing their dwelling; and a smaller proportion who were renters.

Overall, 15.6% of the population owned their dwelling; 28.4% were purchasing, and 48.2% were renting, compared with 13.3%, 26.0% and 56.3% respectively for then Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in New South Wales - ATSI.

The major differences between housing tenure for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households of Broken Hill City and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander households of New South Wales - ATSI were:

  • A larger percentage of households who were renting from the private or other rental market (37.7% compared to 32.3%)
  • A larger percentage of households who were purchasing their dwelling (28.4% compared to 26.0%)
