Manly West is named for the area west of Manly, which is thought to be named after the beachside suburb in Sydney.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, with land used mainly for farming and grazing. Growth took place in the early 1900s as land was subdivided. Development continued during the post-war years, with rapid growth during the 1950s, and further housing developments during the 1970s and 1980s. The population has increased since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
Manly West is an established residential area.
Major features of the area include Mayfair Village on Manly Shopping Centre, Heers Park, Golf Mania Driving Range and a number of schools.
