Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for dairy and general farming. Population was minimal until the 1880s and 1890s, aided by the opening of the railway line and tramline. Significant residential development occurred during the post-war years. The population was relatively stable during the 1990s, and then increased between 2001 and 2006, largely a result of an increase in the number of occupied dwellings.
Fairfield is an established residential area, with some commercial land use.
Major features of the area include Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre, Fairview Park, Robinson Park and Norman Gray Oval.
