Bellbowrie is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "place of flowering gums".

Settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and mining. Significant development did not occur until the early 1970s. The population has increased substantially since the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area. Several new housing estates are being developed on land that used to be pineapple farms.
