Name origin

Wakerley is named after J W Wakerley, an early land holder in the area.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for farming, particularly fruit and vegetable growing. The area remained largely rural until the mid 1990s. Rapid growth took place from 1996, with the population increasing five-fold between 1996 and 2006, a result of large numbers of new dwellings being added to the area.

Wakerley is a rapidly developing residential area, with an industrial area in the west.
