Location and boundaries

Tingalpa is bounded by Fleming Road and a line running continuous of Fleming Road in the north, Wondall Road, Manly Road, New Cleveland Road and Stanbrough Road in the east, Ermelo Road, Marwood Street, Belmont Road, Burstall Avenue and the Gateway Motorway in the south, and Bulimba Creek in the west.

Name origin

Tingalpa is thought to be named from Aboriginal words meaning "place of the plant for stupefying fish".

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, with land used mainly for farming. The area remained largely rural until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place during the 1990s as large numbers of new dwellings were added to the area. The population and dwelling stock were then relatively stable between 2001 and 2006.

Tingalpa is a residential and industrial area, with some outlying rural areas.
