Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Sunshine in 2021 compared to the City of Brimbank shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a smaller proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 40.6% of the population used English only, and 52.9% used a non-English language, compared with 36.3% and 57.3% respectively for the City of Brimbank.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Sunshine was Vietnamese, with 17.1% of the population, or 1,620 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Sunshine and the City of Brimbank in 2021 were:

  • A larger percentage using Nepali at home (3.5% compared to 0.6%)
  • A smaller percentage using Maltese at home (0.4% compared to 2.1%)
