When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Canterbury's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the male resident population in Canterbury in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (727 males or 39.3%)
- Managers (532 males or 28.7%)
- Clerical and Administrative Workers (122 males or 6.6%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 1,381 males in total or 74.6% of the employed male resident population.
In comparison, the City of Boroondara employed 39.0% in Professionals; 23.6% in Managers; and 7.0% in Clerical and Administrative Workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the male population of Canterbury and the City of Boroondara were:
- A larger percentage of males employed as Managers (28.7% compared to 23.6%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (6.3% compared to 8.5%)
- A smaller percentage of males employed as Labourers (3.5% compared to 4.7%)
Emerging groups
The number of employed males in Canterbury decreased by 40 between 2016 and 2021.
There were no major differences in Canterbury between 2016 and 2021.
