Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Balwyn in 2021 compared to the City of Boroondara shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who used English only, and a larger proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 51.3% of the population used English only, and 45.9% used a non-English language, compared with 68.2% and 28.7% respectively for the City of Boroondara.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Balwyn was Mandarin, with 22.0% of the population, or 2,994 people using this language at home.

The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Balwyn and the City of Boroondara in 2021 were:
