Canterbury's language statistics show the proportion of the population who use a language at home other than English. They indicate how culturally diverse a population is and the degree to which different ethnic groups and nationalities are retaining their language.

Dominant groups
Analysis of the language used at home by the population of Canterbury in 2021 compared to Kew shows that there was a similar proportion of people who used English only, as well as a similar proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).
Overall, 70.5% of the population used English only, and 26.5% used a non-English language, compared with 70.3% and 26.3% respectively for Kew.
The dominant language used at home, other than English, in Canterbury was Mandarin, with 13.3% of the population, or 1,009 people using this language at home.
The major differences between the languages used at home for the population of Canterbury and Kew in 2021 were:
- A larger percentage using Mandarin at home (13.3% compared to 8.6%)
- A smaller percentage using Greek at home (1.4% compared to 3.0%)
Emerging groups
Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 211 or 11.7%, and the number of people who used English only decreased by 530 or 9.0%.
The largest changes in the languages used by the population in Canterbury between 2016 and 2021 were for those using:
- Mandarin (+211 persons)
- Vietnamese (+64 persons)
