Benalla (East)

About the profile areas

The 2016 Estimated Resident Population for Benalla (East) is 3,711, with a population density of 3.84 persons per hectare.

Location and boundaries

Benalla (East) is bounded by Racecourse Road and Murrays Road in the north, the extent of the urban area in the east, Greta Road, Kilfeera Road and the Hollands Creek in the south and the Broken River, a line running north-south from Commercial Road and Commercial Road in the west.

Name origin

Benalla is named after an Aboriginal tribe who once inhabited the area.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1836, although growth was generally slow until the post-war period. Pastoralists began setting up sheep and cattle stations along the Broken River in the 1840s, using the land mainly for wheat growing, orchards, vines and grazing. Development was boosted in the 1870s and 1880s by the opening of the Benalla to Wodonga railway line and the branch line from Benalla to Yarrawonga, drawing commercial growth away from the area west of the river and closer to the station on the eastern side of the river. In 1941 an air-training school was opened, later becoming a migrant holding camp and then a public housing estate. Significant growth occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. The population was relatively stable from the mid 1990s, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area, but a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Land use

Benalla (East) is a mixed used area, including residential, commercial, industrial and rural land use. Most of the land in the western area (closest to the river) is residential, with low density residential and rural land use in the eastern area. Much of the northern area is used for industrial purposes. Commercial land use is located mainly along Bridge Street.
