Dominant groups

Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the City of Bayside in 2016 compared to Greater Melbourne shows that there was a smaller proportion of people born overseas, as well as a smaller proportion of people from a non-English speaking background.

Overall, 25.3% of the population was born overseas, and 13.2% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 33.8% and 27.0% respectively for Greater Melbourne.

The largest non-English speaking country of birth in the City of Bayside was China, where 1.8% of the population, or 1,795 people, were born.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the City of Bayside and Greater Melbourne were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in United Kingdom (7.2% compared to 3.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in India (0.8% compared to 3.6%)
