Location and boundaries

Bass Coast Mainland is bounded by the South Gippsland Highway in the north, South Gippsland Shire in the east, Bass Strait in the south, and Western Port Bay in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from 1826 when a military outpost was set up at Corinella. However, permanent settlement did not occur until 1835, with land used mainly for cattle grazing, farming, timber-getting and coal mining. Population was minimal until the 1860s and 1870s when land was opened for selection and townships were established. Growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s, aided by the construction of railway lines and the growth of the Wonthaggi and Inverloch townships. Significant development did not occur until the 1940s. The population increased from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
