Location and boundaries
Wonthaggi District & Surrounds is bounded by the localities of San Remo, Anderson, Woolamai, Ryanston, Glen Alvie, Kongwak and Outtrim in the north, Stuchberry Road, the Bass Highway, Pound Creek Road, Inverloch-Venus Bay Road and Pound Creek in the east, and Bass Strait in the south and west.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1830s, with land used mainly for grazing. Population was minimal until the 1850s when the township of Wonthaggi developed as a result of coal mining. Growth took place in and around the townships of Wonthaggi and Inverloch during the late 1800s and early 1900s, spurred by the construction of railway lines. Significant development did not occur until the 1940s. The population increased from the early 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area.
Wonthaggi District & Surrounds is a mainly rural area which includes the townships of Inverloch and Wonthaggi. Rural land is used largely for sheep grazing and beef and dairy farming.
Major features of the area include the Inverloch and Wonthaggi townships, Chisholm Institute of TAFE (Bass Coast Campus), Bunurong Marine National Park, Wonthaggi State Coal Mine Heritage Area, Bass Coast Regional Health, Wonthaggi Golf Club, Wonthaggi Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Bunurong Environment Centre & Shell Museum, Inverloch Community Hub, McLeod Reserve, North School Wild Flowers Reserve, Rainbow Park, Wonthaggi Rifle Range, Wetlands Reserve, Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve, Wonthaggi Cemetery, Bass Coast Rail Trail, several beaches and a number of schools.
Wonthaggi District & Surrounds encompasses the localities of Cape Paterson, Harmers Haven, Kilcunda, Lance Creek, North Wonthaggi, South Dudley, St Clair, Wattle Bank, West Creek and Wonthaggi, most of the locality of Dalyston, and the Bass Coast Shire parts of the localities of Inverloch and Pound Creek.
