Analysis of the language spoken at home by the population of Bankstown in 2011 compared to Bankstown City shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those speaking a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 17.0% of the population spoke English only, and 74.1% spoke a non-English language, compared with 39.7% and 54.7% respectively for Bankstown City.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in Bankstown was Arabic, with 23.5% of the population, or 7,216 people speaking this language at home.
