Location and boundaries

West Ward is bounded by the Hume Highway, Saltash Street and Marion Street in the north, Clarence Street, Augusta Street, Gleeson Avenue, Eldridge Road, Canterbury Road and The River Road in the east, the railway line in the south, and the Georges River in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, with land used mainly for poultry farms and vegetable gardens. Significant development did not occur until the early 1900s. During World War 2, substantial aircraft and armaments operations were established at Bankstown Airport. Rapid residential growth took place in the immediate post-war years, aided by industrial development and public housing construction. The population increased slightly from the mid 1990s as new dwellings were added to the area, particularly medium density housing.
