Location and boundaries

North Ward is bounded by the water supply pipeline in the north, Rookwood Road, the Hume Highway and the railway line in the east, Marion Street, Saltash Street and the Hume Highway in the south, and Woodville Road in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, although population was minimal until the late 1800s. Land was used mainly for market gardens, orchards and poultry farms. Significant development did not occur until the 1920s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. Rapid growth took place during the post-war years, aided by public housing construction and industrial development. The population increased gradually from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly medium and high density housing.
