Location and boundaries

East Ward is bounded by the northern boundary of the Chullora rail workshops and the Hume Highway in the north, Roberts Road, Moondo Street, Drew Street, Roberts Road, Juno Parade, Punchbowl Road, Koala Road and Punchbowl Road in the east, Canterbury Road, Fairford Road, Stacey Street, Macauley Avenue, Chapel Road South and Eldridge Road in the south, and Gleeson Avenue, Augusta Street, Clarence Street, Marion Street, the railway line, the Hume Highway and Rookwood Road in the west.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates from the early 1800s, with land used mainly for timber-getting, farming and market gardening. Growth was minimal until the late 1800s and early 1900s, spurred by improved access. Significant development occurred during the immediate post-war years. The population increased from the early 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, particularly high and medium density housing.

East Ward is an established residential area, with industrial areas in the north, and several commercial areas.
