Settlement of the area dates from 1798. Growth was minimal until the late 1800s. Significant development did not occur until the interwar period. Rapid growth took place in the immediate post-war years, aided by public housing construction. The population fluctuated slightly from the early 1990s, a result of small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of people living in each dwelling.
