Dominant groups

Analysis of the language used at home by the population of the City of Ballarat in 2021 compared to Regional VIC shows that there was a larger proportion of people who used English only, and a similar proportion of those using a non-English language (either exclusively, or in addition to English).

Overall, 88.1% of the population used English only, and 7.0% used a non-English language, compared with 86.4% and 7.1% respectively for Regional VIC.

The dominant language used at home, other than English, in the City of Ballarat was Mandarin, with 0.9% of the population, or 968 people using this language at home.

There were no major differences between City of Ballarat and Regional VIC in 2021.

Emerging groups

Between 2016 and 2021, the number of people who used a language other than English at home increased by 2,543 or 46.8%, and the number of people who used English only increased by 10,175 or 11.3%.
