Dominant groups
Analysis of the religious affiliation of the population of Greater Adelaide in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of people who professed a religion and a higher proportion who stated they had no religion.
Overall, 49.3% of the population nominated a religion, and 44.9% said they had no religion, compared with 53.8% and 38.7% respectively for Australia.
The largest single religion in Greater Adelaide was Western (Roman) Catholic, with 16.4% of the population or 227,919 people as adherents.
The major differences between the religious affiliation for the population of Greater Adelaide and Australia were:
- A larger percentage who nominated Uniting Church (3.9% compared to 2.6%)
- A larger percentage who nominated Lutheran (1.6% compared to 0.6%)
- A smaller percentage who nominated Western (Roman) Catholic (16.4% compared to 19.6%)
- A smaller percentage who nominated Anglican (7.0% compared to 9.8%)
Emerging groups
The largest changes in the religious affiliation of the population in Greater Adelaide between 2001 and 2021 were for those who nominated:
