Occupation of employment

There were more technicians and trades workers in Regional WA in 2021 than any other occupation.

Regional WA's occupation statistics quantify the occupations in which the residents work (which may be within the residing area or elsewhere). This will be influenced by the economic base and employment opportunities available in the area, education levels, and the working and social aspirations of the population. When viewed with other indicators, such as Educational Qualifications and Individual Income, Occupation is a key measure for evaluating Regional WA's socio-economic status and skill base.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Regional WA in 2021 shows the three most popular occupations were:

  • Technicians and Trades Workers (43,221 people or 17.6%)
  • Professionals (35,748 people or 14.6%)
  • Managers (35,016 people or 14.3%)

In combination these three occupations accounted for 113,985 people in total or 46.4% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Victoria employed 12.6% in Technicians and Trades Workers; 25.0% in Professionals; and 14.0% in Managers.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Regional WA and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed as Technicians and Trades Workers (17.6% compared to 12.6%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed as Machinery Operators And Drivers (10.8% compared to 5.9%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed as Labourers (12.5% compared to 8.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed as Professionals (14.6% compared to 25.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Regional WA increased by 10,056 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the occupations of residents between 2016 and 2021 in Regional WA were for those employed as:

  • Community and Personal Service Workers (+3,820 persons)
  • Professionals (+3,303 persons)
  • Managers (+1,194 persons)
  • Labourers (+993 persons)
