Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Greater Darwin in 2021 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Public Administration and Safety (13,939 people or 18.7%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (10,171 people or 13.6%)
  • Construction (6,556 people or 8.8%)

In combination, these three industries employed 30,666 people in total or 41.1% of the total employed resident population.

In comparison, Victoria employed 5.6% in Public Administration and Safety; 14.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; and 9.4% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Greater Darwin and Victoria were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in public administration and safety (18.7% compared to 5.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (2.6% compared to 7.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in financial and insurance services (1.1% compared to 4.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (5.5% compared to 8.4%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Greater Darwin increased by 3,263 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2016 and 2021 in Greater Darwin were for those employed in:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+3,432 persons)
  • Construction (-1,984 persons)
  • Accommodation and Food Services (+1,024 persons)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+669 persons)
