Dominant groups
Analysis of the household/family types in Greater Capital Cities in 2021 compared to Victoria shows that there was a higher proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a similar proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 32.5% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 10.6% were one-parent families, compared with 30.9% and 10.2% respectively for Victoria.
There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a similar proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 23.4% compared to 24.7% in Victoria while the proportion of couples without children was 24.2% compared to 24.6% in Victoria.

The number of households in Greater Capital Cities increased by 632,160 between 2016 and 2021.
The largest changes in family/household types in Greater Capital Cities between 2016 and 2021 were:
