Dominant groups

Analysis of the household/family types in Regional WA in 2021 compared to Australia shows that there was a lower proportion of couple families with child(ren) as well as a lower proportion of one-parent families. Overall, 23.8% of total families were couple families with child(ren), and 8.7% were one-parent families, compared with 29.7% and 10.5% respectively for Australia.

There were a lower proportion of lone person households and a similar proportion of couples without children. Overall, the proportion of lone person households was 23.2% compared to 24.2% in Australia while the proportion of couples without children was 25.7% compared to 25.4% in Australia.

Emerging groups

The number of households in Regional WA increased by 14,315 between 2016 and 2021.

The largest changes in family/household types in Regional WA between 2016 and 2021 were:

  • Lone person (+5,817 households)
  • Couples without children (+3,051 households)
  • One parent families (+1,237 households)
  • Couples with children (-702 households)
